The Gale Centre

The Gale Centre is a community-run visitor and information centre at Achtercairn, on the rising ground above Gairloch and adjacent to the Gairloch Museum. The centre is operated by the Gairloch and Loch Ewe Action Forum (Gale), the local community-development charity, and combines visitor information, a café, a working community shop, exhibition space and a meeting room used by local groups across the year.

The visitor-information side is the most direct draw for travellers passing through. Walking-route information for the surrounding Wester Ross hills (Beinn Eighe, Slioch, the Torridon range), local-event listings, the standard tourist-board literature, and the working café provide the kind of first-stop function that a small Highland village needs. The café leans on local supply and operates as a daytime stop independently of the visitor side.

The community side is the building’s purpose. The Gale Action Forum was set up in the early 2000s as a community-development charity covering the Gairloch and Loch Ewe area, and the Centre is the physical anchor, exhibitions, evening events, the local walking-group meeting point, occasional small-cinema and live-music nights, and the meeting room used by the parish council and the local heritage groups.
