The Crags Hotel stands at the eastern end of Main Street in Callander, on the corner where the road turns up toward the Callander Crags and the start of the Bracklinn Falls walk. The building is a traditional Scottish inn rather than a boutique stay, and the operation describes itself plainly as such: clean, welcoming and comfortable, not styled.
All rooms are en-suite. The standard rooms on the upper floor have shower rooms; the superior rooms on the ground floor have bath and shower. Each room carries the standard kit of colour television, clock radio alarm, trouser press, hairdryer and tea-and-coffee tray. One ground-floor superior room has full wheelchair access with a separate bath and shower; the property holds a VisitScotland Tourist Board disabled access rating of three, which is the upper end for a Victorian inn of this size.
The food side runs across three rooms from one kitchen: a lively public bar, a quieter snug with an open fire, and a separate dining room. The menu is written around the staple traditional Scottish meats, Highland beef and lamb and Perthshire venison, with daily-changing fish alongside and a working vegetarian list that is unusual for an inn of this size in a small Trossachs village. Prices sit at the well-priced end of the Callander range, and the bars are open to non-residents through the evening.
The Crags works for two distinct types of stay. Walkers heading up the Crags or onto Bracklinn from the village start within a few hundred metres of the door. Drivers passing through Callander on the way north to Loch Lubnaig, Strathyre and the higher Trossachs find the central Main Street position practical for a one-night stop without needing to leave the village for food or fuel.
Breakfast is included in the room rate. Bookings and current availability by phone on 01877 381398 or at the Crags Hotel website.
