The Byre Inn

The Byre Inn sits in Brig O’Turk on the A821 between Loch Achray and Loch Venachar, the smallest of the Trossachs villages and the route the Duke’s Pass takes between Callander and Aberfoyle. The inn occupies a converted farm building (the byre that gives the operation its name) and runs as a gastro-pub rather than a traditional country inn.

The kitchen is the principal draw and the reason for the journey. The food is described as innovative-pub-style and built around fresh local ingredients, with the daily menu writing itself off what comes in from the surrounding farms and from the village’s suppliers up the road. The cooking sits above the standard country-pub fare and below restaurant-week pricing; for the eastern Trossachs the Byre is one of the better lunch or dinner stops.

The interior runs to a cosy log-fire dining room for the autumn and winter months and to outside decking for the summer ones. Ample parking covers the door. The bar carries the standard set of cask ales, wines and spirits without trying to compete with the Lade Inn at Kilmahog on the real-ale range.

Open eleven to eleven seven days a week, with the Sunday opening pushed back to noon. The Byre suits a midday stop on the Trossachs loop drive (Callander, Brig O’Turk, Loch Katrine, Aberfoyle) and a quieter evening dinner paired with a stay either in Brig O’Turk (Burnt Inn House) or at Glenbruach on Loch Achray.
