The Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre sits in woodland next to Loch Lomond Shores at Balloch, a short walk from the village and its train station. It keeps a collection of more than thirty birds across around twenty-five species, from owls and kestrels to buzzards, hawks, falcons and a golden eagle, with the emphasis on rescue, rehabilitation and conservation as much as on display.
Visitors walk the wooded trail among the aviaries at their own pace, reading about each bird and the centre’s work with injured and unwanted raptors. Keepers run flying demonstrations through the day, weather allowing, when the birds fly free over the clearing and the audience hears how each species hunts. The setting, oak woodland on the southern shore of the loch, suits the birds and makes for a quiet hour or two away from the busier attractions next door.
For those who want to get closer, the centre runs hands-on experiences: a chance to hold and fly a bird under instruction, half-day falconry sessions and longer photography slots, all booked separately. There is a small gift shop, and the trail and viewing areas are largely accessible.
The centre opens daily through the main season with shorter hours in winter, so current times are worth checking before a trip; staff also advise against trusting the postcode on satnav and suggest following signs for Loch Lomond Shores instead. Loch Lomond Shores, Balloch, G83 8QL. Opening times and experience bookings by phone on 07751 862416 or via the centre’s website.
