Monachyle Mhor sits four miles down a single-track road from Balquhidder, on the wooded south shore of Loch Voil at the head of a working farm that runs to two thousand acres of hill country above the loch. The operation is owned and run by chef Tom Lewis and family; The Independent’s 2007 description of the place as a “pilgrimage site for Scottish foodies” stuck, and the kitchen has held its position as a destination restaurant in central Scotland through the decades since.

The hotel side runs fourteen rooms in the original pink farmhouse and the modern extension, individually styled rather than uniformly fitted, with the loch view carried through the front rooms and the hill view through the back. Each room is finished to the comfortable-with-character register the operation runs on rather than the styled-corporate register; the place works for slow weekend stays as much as for one-night dinner-and-bed visits.

The restaurant is the principal draw and the reason most diners drive the single-track approach. The kitchen runs daily-changing menus around produce from the farm and Highland Perthshire larder: hill lamb from the estate, foraged plants from the hillsides, Loch Tay fish, daily-made bread from the Mhor Bread bakery in Callander (a separate listing in this guide), and game in season. Lunch and dinner run set-price options; Sunday lunch is the steady-trade fixture, and evening tables book up at weekends through the year.
