Breadalbane Folklore Centre, Killin

The Breadalbane Folklore Centre occupies the former St Fillan’s Mill, a converted meal mill on a small island in the River Dochart at the Falls of Dochart in Killin, at the western end of Loch Tay. The Category B listed building still carries its working waterwheel, and the setting beside the tumbling falls is one of the most photographed spots in the southern Highlands.

The centre originally told the story of Breadalbane and the surrounding clan country, with displays on local history and on St Fillan, the eighth-century missionary whose healing stones are kept in Killin and were traditionally used to treat the sick. Council budget cuts forced it to close in 2011, but a community effort reopened the building, now run largely by volunteers and trading as The Old Mill.

In its current form the ground floor holds a charity and second-hand shop, the upper floor an arts-and-crafts space, and the building hosts a local makers’ market and heritage displays alongside the waterwheel. Opening tends to run Wednesday to Saturday across the main season, though hours depend on volunteer availability and are worth checking before a special trip.

The location is the constant attraction whatever the building’s current use: the Falls of Dochart run right past the door, the old bridge gives the classic view, and the Clan MacNab burial ground sits on the island just upstream.
