The Torridon

The Torridon stands at the head of Upper Loch Torridon at Annat, a converted Victorian shooting lodge set under the cliff lines of Liathach in the Torridon glens. The site has been a building of some kind since 1887, when William King-Noel, first Earl of Lovelace, completed the main house as Ben Damph House. The Lovelace family converted it to a hotel in the early 1960s; the Gregory family bought it in 1992 and their daughter Rohaise Rose-Bristow and her husband Daniel have run it since 2004.

The main hotel keeps eighteen rooms and suites, all looking out across the loch or up into the hills. The 1887 restaurant takes its name from the build date of the house and holds a Michelin Star; the dining room is wood-lined with a hand-painted zodiac ceiling reflecting Queen Victoria’s interest in astrology. The whisky bar carries over three hundred and sixty-five malts. A short walk along the loch is the Torridon Inn, the more informal sister property with seventeen rooms above a bar and bistro, geared to walkers, climbers and overnighters on the way through.

The estate runs as an outdoor base as much as a hotel. Activities include guided hill walking on Liathach, Beinn Eighe and Beinn Alligin, sea kayaking on the loch, gorge scrambling, fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting, deer stalking in season and Highland cattle visits at the working farm.
