Essence of India

Essence of India occupies a small premises just off West Lane in central Ullapool, two blocks back from the harbour. The carry-out trade has historically driven the listing, Ullapool’s CalMac ferry to Stornoway has an early-morning sailing through the summer, and a takeaway eaten on the quayside the evening before the boat (or carried aboard for breakfast) is a reasonably long-established tradition in the village.

The kitchen runs the standard British-Indian menu with reasonable depth, the Bengali, Punjabi and South Indian staples (rogan josh, korma, balti, biryani, dosa-and-rice variations) alongside a chef’s-specials block that turns over seasonally. The dining room itself is small (a dozen tables), with takeaway covering the bulk of the trade most evenings.

The geographic claim, “northernmost Indian on the British mainland”, is the one the listing trades on. The next-nearest options heading north are sporadic (Wick and Thurso carry occasional Indian takeaways but not always continuously open), and the next-nearest reliably-open Indian dining room going further south is back down in Inverness eighty-five miles away by road. The claim is defensible at most points through the year.
