Ecotone Cabins

Ecotone Cabins is a small set of architect-designed self-catering cabins in Leckmelm Wood, six miles south-east of Ullapool on the A835 toward Garve. The cabins sit set back from the road inside a Victorian arboretum, Leckmelm was laid out as a planted estate in the 1870s, and the surviving trees include some of the largest specimens of Sitka spruce, Douglas fir and Wellingtonia (giant sequoia) on the west coast, planted as part of a fashionable late-Victorian collecting project.

Each cabin is a separate single-storey timber build with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the trees, a small private deck, and the working domestic kit (kitchen, bathroom, woodburner) that a self-catering stay needs. The architectural register is contemporary rather than rustic, the cabins are designed to read as carefully-placed objects in the woodland rather than as cottages dressed up. Bookings run as standard short breaks with a two-night minimum stay.

The position is the second half of the argument. Leckmelm sits at the head of Loch Broom on the south-east shore, with the Ullapool–Inverness road running past the foot of the woodland. The walk down to the loch is ten minutes through the trees; Ullapool itself is fifteen minutes by car back along the A835. The arboretum is open to walkers during daylight hours and carries a small loop walk past the largest of the named trees.
