MHOR Bread runs from a converted shopfront at the western end of Main Street in Callander, the bakery-and-tearoom outpost of the Tom Lewis family’s Monachyle Mhor operation up in Balquhidder. The Lewis family farm Highland cattle and rare-breed pigs at Monachyle Mhor on the shore of Loch Voil and supply the meat for the pies sold on the counter here; the bakery side runs in parallel for the village trade and for passing Trossachs traffic.

The traditional Scottish baking is the foundation of what comes off the counter: Black Bun, Buttered Bannocks, Perkins (the spiced ginger biscuit), bridies, scones and morning rolls. Alongside that runs an artisan bread range that includes black olive and rosemary, red onion and poppy seed, sourdough and rye, baked through the morning and sold until they run out. The Monachyle Mhor pies (the traditional Scotch and the venison) are the other Lewis-family signature, hot at lunchtime and cold from the cabinet through the day.

The tearoom side covers the seating end of the shop with strong coffee, loose-leaf tea and a deli counter of made-up sandwiches, soups and savouries. The bakery functions as the Callander morning stop for many local residents as much as for visitors.

Open seven days, broadly seven to five. Phone 01877 339518 or current trading hours and seasonal closures at the MHOR website.
