The Oban Photographic Centre is an independent camera shop on George Street, the main shopping run through the town. The combination of sales counter and print lab is the heart of what it does: cameras, lenses and accessories on the new and used shelves; a printing service for digital files brought in on USB, SD card or sent over by email; and processing for the film stocks still in circulation, which has become a quieter but resilient corner of the trade since the mid-2010s revival of interest in 35mm and medium format.
Independent camera shops have thinned out across the UK over the past two decades; Oban is fortunate to have kept one. For visitors the practical case is straightforward, battery, card or filter replacements on the road, prints to send home from a holiday album, a film roll dropped in at the start of a Hebridean trip and picked up at the end. For locals it is the shop that the working photographers in Argyll have used for years.
The premises are a short walk from the railway station and the ferry terminal. Standard six-day shop hours through the week; closed Sundays outside peak season.
