Salen Bay Campsite

The campsite sits on the foreshore at Salen, on the east coast of Mull about half way between Craignure and Tobermory. The position is the selling point: a few yards from the high-water mark of Salen Bay, with the Sound of Mull and the Morvern hills filling the view to the east. The pitches run along the grass behind the shingle; tents go closer to the water, vans and motorhomes to the back where there are hard-standings.

Salen itself is the village in the middle of the island, small, but the practical centre of Mull. The road from Craignure (and the Oban ferry) meets the Tobermory road here; the route west to Ulva Ferry, Calgary and Iona turns off the main road just south of the village. Salen has the only petrol station between Craignure and Tobermory, a Spar shop with the island’s post office, two pubs (the Salen Hotel and the Coffee Pot) and a bakery. The Glenforsa airstrip is a mile south and is occasionally visited by small aircraft.

Wreck enthusiasts may know the spot for the two rusting fishing boats, the Joyce Anne and the Annie B, beached on the shingle a couple of hundred yards east of the campsite, gradually returning to the sea. They are photographed thousands of times every summer.
