The Elphin Tearooms

The Elphin Tearooms sit just off the A835 at Elphin, a small crofting village on the road between Ullapool and Lochinver, in the southern fringe of Sutherland where the road skirts Cul Mor and Cul Beag. The Lochinver–Ullapool drive runs around 40 miles by the most direct routes, much of it through empty moorland and lochans, and the tearoom is the only reliable break-point on the section. Windows look out over the loch and the surrounding mountains.

Food is straightforward and home-cooked: soup, sandwiches and toasties at lunchtime, plus a regular range of home baking and traybakes that turn it into the standard mid-morning or mid-afternoon stop for traffic on this stretch of the NC500. Open seasonally, typically Easter to October, with reduced hours into the shoulder season; worth checking ahead in spring and autumn.

Elphin is the home of the Knockan Crag visitor centre a couple of miles north, run by NatureScot. Knockan is one of the most important geology sites in Scotland, the surface trace of the Moine Thrust, where older Moine rocks have been pushed bodily north-west over younger sediments. The discovery in the 1880s by Peach and Horne overturned the then-dominant model of how mountain belts form; the visitor centre’s outdoor trail walks the evidence at the crag itself. A combined stop for the geology and a slice of cake makes a memorable hour off the road.
