The Captain's Cabin

Bookshop, gift shop and Lochbroom Hardware at one address on Quay Street, central Ullapool's combined chandlery, hardware store and independent bookshop.

Address
Quay Street, Ullapool
IV26 2UE

The Captain’s Cabin occupies a single Quay Street building that carries three businesses under one roof, the Ullapool Bookshop, the gift-and-souvenir shop, and Lochbroom Hardware, which is the combined chandlery and household-hardware operation that handles everything from rope and shackles for the harbour boats to paint, screws and the standard small-town hardware run.

The bookshop is the headline. Ullapool Bookshop has built a long-standing reputation as the kind of independent that takes its trade seriously, substantial Highland and Scottish-interest stock (the standard mountain-and-loch reference shelf alongside contemporary Scottish fiction and a deeper-than-expected poetry section), a working children’s department, plus the standard travel and natural-history sections that tourist traffic underpins. The shop is small but the stock turn is high.

The hardware side is the practical workhorse of the building. Ullapool is a working fishing port as well as a tourist town, and Lochbroom Hardware carries the chandlery range that the harbour needs, rope, blocks, fenders, navigation hardware, basic tooling, alongside the household run that any village hardware store has to. The gift-shop slice carries Scottish-made souvenirs, prints, postcards, the holiday-from-Ullapool box-ticking shelf.

The Quay Street location puts the building two minutes from the CalMac ferry slip. Standard small-town opening hours, reduced in winter. Current opening at the Ullapool Bookshop website.
