Nories Fish & Chips

Nories is a fish and chip shop on George Street, the main shopping street through Oban. It has been at number 88 for several decades and is one of the older independent takeaways in the town. The offer is the conventional fish-supper range you’d expect from a Scottish chippy, battered haddock and cod with chips, a fish-roll list, the usual run of pies, sausages and burgers, cooked to order and handed across the counter.

Oban’s chippy scene caters in equal measure to the town’s permanent population and to the considerable summer through-traffic on the ferries to Mull, Lismore, Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist; a chip supper on the harbour wall watching the CalMac come in is one of the simpler pleasures of an evening in Oban, and Nories’ position a few minutes’ walk from the ferry terminal makes it a practical pre- or post-sailing stop. There’s no sit-in: it’s a takeaway counter only.

The queue moves at the pace you’d expect for a small kitchen cooking fresh; allow ten or fifteen minutes at peak times. Cash and card are taken. Open lunchtimes and evenings through the week, closed Sundays in the off-season.
