Falls of Lora Hotel

Family-run hotel at Connel Ferry, four miles north of Oban, looking across Loch Etive to the famous Falls of Lora tidal rapids.

Address
Connel Ferry, by Oban
PA37 1PB

The hotel sits at Connel, where Loch Etive narrows to meet the sea. It looks south toward the Falls of Lora, the tidal rapids that form when the outgoing or incoming tide is forced over an underwater sill at the loch’s mouth. The wave they make is significant enough to draw whitewater kayakers from across Scotland on the bigger spring tides; from the hotel windows you watch it build, peak, and then quiet again as the loch evens out with the sea.

The Connel road bridge (built 1903 as a railway crossing, converted to road use after the line closed in 1966) frames the view to the south. Four miles down the A85 is Oban itself, with the railway station and the CalMac terminal serving Mull, Lismore, Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist. Connel makes a practical base for anyone using the islands as a stepping-off point but who would rather sleep somewhere quieter than the harbourfront.

Family-run, with a restaurant looking onto the loch and a bar serving guests and locals. The Caledonia Way long-distance cycle route passes nearby. Connel itself has a small shop, a post office, and the Oyster Inn for an alternative pub meal.
