The stables sit on Glencruitten Road, the back road that climbs inland from the south side of Oban into the wooded hills behind the town. Glencruitten itself is a small upland glen of farmland and birch wood, opening on to the higher moors that separate Oban from Loch Awe. The yard takes its name from the farm.
What’s offered covers the usual ground for a small Argyll riding centre: hacks of an hour or two through the surrounding farmland and forestry tracks, beginner lessons in an enclosed school, and longer rides for more experienced riders. The terrain works at both ends of the spectrum. Short loops keep to gentler ground near the yard; longer routes climb above the glen, with views down to Oban Bay and across to Kerrera and Mull on a clear day.
The yard runs through most of the year, weather permitting. Winter rides can be wet and the higher tracks get muddy, so layers, waterproofs and sensible footwear are advisable whatever the forecast says when you set off. Helmets are provided. Booking ahead is sensible, particularly through the summer when smaller groups fill quickly.
Glencruitten Road is signposted off the main road through Oban; allow ten minutes from the seafront. It is single-track in places with passing places, and shares the route with farm and forestry traffic, so the drive in rewards taking your time.
