Tobermory Pharmacy

Tobermory Pharmacy is the only community pharmacy on Mull, on the row of painted buildings that lines Main Street above the harbour. The shop runs as the island’s prescription dispensary and over-the-counter chemist together, which makes it the practical point of contact for residents and visitors who need medication, advice or the standard travel-pharmacy items that the climate of west Scotland tends to require.

The pharmacy carries the prescription range that an NHS community dispensary is set up for, alongside the over-the-counter staples: paracetamol and ibuprofen lines, antihistamines, plasters and dressings, first-aid, the cold-and-flu shelf, the standard family toiletries. The midge-repellent shelf is its own modest commercial proposition in the summer months: Smidge, Avon Skin So Soft, the head-nets and the long-sleeve travel range.

The pharmacist runs the standard NHS community services: minor-ailments consultation, emergency-supply prescriptions for travellers who have run out, the medicine-use reviews and seasonal vaccinations that go with community-pharmacy contracts in Scotland. Visitors with a prescription written elsewhere in the UK can have it dispensed here without difficulty; outside-UK visitors should call ahead.

The shop closes for lunch from one until two, which is a town-shop pattern across rural Scotland and worth knowing if walking up from the harbour expecting a quick stop.
